Here is an excerpt from the Career Center:
Short Definition Gunsmith - a person who repairs and modifies firearms to blueprint and customer specifications, using hand tools and machines, such as grinders, planers, and millers.
Expanded Information One of the greatest things about the Gunsmithing field is the job satisfaction of performing an artisan craft which many would like to do IF THEY HAD THE SKILLS. As a Gunsmith, individuals perform detailed hand and machine work to exact specifications, working on their customer's prized possessions. Certainly, a Gunsmith's customer would perform their own repairs and enhancements if they could, but they can only watch and wish. The art of manipulating metal and wood, combining the characteristics of each into a perfectly functioning machine is an enviable skill; a skill which the CST graduate possesses.
The ATF estimates that there are over 260,000,000 (that's 260 MILLION) guns in the United States with 11,450 legitimate gunsmiths available to work on them (based upon national Yellow Page listings). That equates to 22,700 guns per Gunsmith. That shows solid job security in a marketable career like few others! With that type of need, it is no wonder that skilled, trained, professional Gunsmiths are in high demand.
